NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP COULD BE ONE REASON WHY YOU CAN'T SHED THOSE EXTRA POUNDS


Sleeping less than 7-8 hours a night caused subjects to be more likelier to gain 11 pounds over six years. What causes this? Less sleep decreases the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin and increases the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin. Also, being tired makes you move around less, therefore, burning less calories.

My plan for tomorrow:

I'm making my oatmeal for tomorrow morning tonight as I write this.
making breakfast the night before saves time in the morning.

I'm making my lunch and snacks tonight for tomorrow. Same reason as above. Also, if I plan ahead I tend not to eat quick, non-nutritious, not good for my figure food.

Walk the dog tomorrow.

Eat no snacks the patients bring in, but if I do it will be a bite and then toss.

Workout my biceps and abs tomorrow.

Let me know what exercise you love and which one you hate the most.

Now as far as an exercise that I hate? Well, I don't love crunches...hate is such a strong word. I think you can do more for your abs with other exercises. Such as Sun and Moons with an exercise ball, Leg lifts on a captains chair, even using a hoop which I actually do!). My kids think it's funny but it actually does a great job working your abs!!!!!!!

What is your favorite exercise?

Mine is the Pushup. I love pushups because they take care or so many muscles at once. Triceps, Biceps, shoulders, back and chest. Also, if you do them with an exercise ball under your shins you can also cover core muscles. Don't be discouraged if you can't do many. Stay persistant!!!! YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO MORE AS YOU PROGRESS! NEVER GIVE UP!

What should I eat today?

Happy New Year! I've had a couple of days off and how I love days off!

My mornings are busy. I have to be out of the house by 6:45 a.m. for work so I like easy but good breakfasts. I've recently discovered Greek yogurt and love it! It's like eating dessert. I've never really "loved" yogurt but eat it anyways because I know it's good for me. Greek yogurt is sooo delicious, even the plain one. Try this recipe for breakfast. (all meals below are under 400 calories)

BREAKFAST
NO-FUSS GREEK YOGURT PARFAIT

Ingredients:
1/4 cup of dry oats
14 cup of raspberries
7 walnuts
1 cup 0% Greek Yogurt

Preparation:
Add oats, raspberries and walnuts to yogurt.

A.M. SNACK:
1 Cup Apple slices
1 1/2 tbsp cruncy peanut butter
(198 calories)

LUNCH:
AVOCADO TURKEY WRAP

Ingredients:
1 whole wheat wrap
1 tbsp salsa
2 oz (3 1/2 slices) turkey breast
1 oz reduced fat (5 g of fat or less) jalapeno cheese
1/4 cubed avocado

Preparation:
On the wrap, evenly spread salsa in the middle. Place turkdy breast and cheese on top. Top with avocado and fold.

1 cup raspberries
12 oz. unsweetened iced tea and lemon

P.M. SNACK:
12 oz. skim milk w/ 3 tbsp light chocolate syrup (200 calories)

DINNER:
HONEY GLAZED GARLIC BAKED CHICKEN

Ingredients:
2 5 oz. raw chicken breasts
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 chopped shallot
2 minced garlic cloves
1/2 tsp dried basil or 4 torn leaves
1/4 tsp pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place chicken in a foil-lined baking pan. In a liquid measuring cup add honey. vinegar. shallot, garlic, basil and pepper. Pour mixture onto chicken.

SPICY BAKED SWEET POTATO ROUNDS

Ingredients:
2 small sweet potatoes cut into rounds
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Dash kosher salt

Put all ingredients in a sealable plastic baggie. Shake until evenly mixed. Empty around chicken. Bake for 30-35 minutes. (Can freeze chicken and potatoes to re-heat another week).

Sauteed Mushrooms
Ingredients:
1/2 cup sauteed mushrooms
Preparation:
Saute in 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tsp minced garlic.

Steamed Garlic Bok Choy
Ingredients
2 minced garlic cloves
1 head bok choy

Preparation:
In a large pot with 1 tbsp water on medium heat, add garlic. Chop off base of bok choy. Wash and tear bok choy and add to water. Place lid on and steam for 8 minutes.

I realize these recipes aren't enough for a family. At the very least it gives you an idea of what you can eat and how many calories are in meals made like this. I find sometimes that I either under or over estimate how many calories are in foods and meals.

EATING-CLEAN GUACAMOLE

I love good for you recipes that taste great!

Ingredients:
3 ripe Avocados
Juice for 1/2 fresh lime
1 Tbsp/15 ml chopped cilantro
1/2 red or purple onion, minced well
1 clove garlic passed through a garlic press
sea salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Preparation:
1. Cut avocados in half. Discard pit and scoop flesh into bowl. Place all ingredients in medium bowl and mix until just combined. Don't overmix.

Nutritional info:Calories: 166/Calories from fat: 132/ Protein: 2g/Carbs: 10g/Dietary Fiber: 6g/Sugars: 1g/Fat:14g/Sodium:8mg6 servings

Kettlebells? What are they? And what do I do with them?


I recently introduced myself to the Kettlebell exercise routine and I absolutely love it!!
The kettlebell is a Russian cast iron weight that looks to me like a tea kettle. Some think it looks like a bowling ball with a handle. The newer versions are prettier and have a rubber type material on the handle.
The kettlebell is a tool used with exercises that are intended to increase strength, endurance, agility and balance. I have used them and they do just that! They challenge both muscle and cardiovascular systems with interesting, functional body movements.
This sport has been around for decades especially with mixed martial artists but has recently gotten more popular with all athletes and exercise enthusiasts.
I have to say that I have been exercising all my life with dumbbells and weight machines and have gotten the fastest results from Kettlebells.
I bought my kettlebells at a used sporting goods store where they are sold by weight but kettlebells can be bought online. I bought my instructional DVD from Artofstrength.com and absolutely love it!!!! There are different levels and Anthony Dilugio is the best instructor I've encountered.
This exercise can be done at home anytime and if you are consistant you won't regret the investment!

Asthma and Diet

If you or you know someone who has asthma you know how scary it can be to have an asthma attack. I would like to believe that we can at least make the attacks less severe or less often by what we eat, drink, breathe and put in our environments. The following is a synopsis of an article I read regarding asthma and diet.

Asthma is the result of triggers causing swelling of tissues in the air passages of the lung making it difficult to breath. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing.

There are some foods that trigger asthma:

Foods containing the additives:

Benzoates (E210-19) which can be in soft drinks and chewing gum.

Sulphites (E220-8) or gallates (E310-12) which can be found in deli foods.

Cider, wine and beer

Foods containing yeast or mold such as bread and blue cheeses.

Foods, drinks and snacks containing coloring E102, E104 and E110 which are yellow colorings.

Cow milk, wheat, eggs, fish, soy and nuts, especially peanuts.

BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene) which can be found in some breakfast cereals.

There are foods that help with asthma:

Coffee can help control the severity of attacks.

Foods that dilate air passages by thinning the mucus and opening them up for freer breathing:

Spicy foods such as chili, hot mustard, garlic and onions.

These work because they stimulate nerves resulting in the release of watery fluid in the mouth, throat and lungs.

Foods that control inflammation of airways:

Onions, fatty fish (fish oil in high in omega -3 fatty acids) and vitamin C packed foods. Eat plenty of foods in “B” vitamins such as green leafy vegetables and magnesium rich foods such as sunflower seeds, green vegetables and dried figs. These help relax airways.

Some asthmatics are found to be deficient in niacin, vitamin B6 and C.

Other helpful foods:

Antioxidants such as Vitamin A found in liver

Beta-carotene found in brightly-colored fruits and vegetables such as apricots, carrots, red and yellow peppers, dark leafy vegetables, spinach

Vitamin C rich foods such as citrus fruits

Vitamin E found in foods such as olive oil

These foods, vitamins and minerals may strengthen the lungs defenses by getting rid of free radicals. These potentially harmful substances (free radicals) are generated as part of the inflammatory response to air pollution or allergens that affect asthmatics.

Research indicates that people with low magnesium levels are more susceptible to attacks. Research also indicates that fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and cod help protect against asthma. Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti inflammatory effect.

If you take anything away from this article take away the fact that what you eat and breath have an affect on your body. Also it is very important to read labels of what you consume or expose yourself and others to either by eating, drinking, breathing or by what you are applying to skin. Also, consult a physician for optimal health and care plans regarding any asthma condition.
